Key learnings of Cargo Drone mission for UN in Dominican Republic – Presented by Barry Koperberg, Wings for Aid, at Unmanned Cargo Aircraft Conference, which will take place on November 28, 2018, at RAI Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Together with DLR, Wings for Aid has run a 2-week Cargo Drone mission program for the World Food Program in the Dominican Republic. During the mission, we have simulated ‘last-mile’ delivery problems and have bridged them by the use of a 20kg delivery box and an unmanned helicopter. During the presentation, we will share key learnings on logistics, flight permits, stakeholder reactions and the like. We look forward to an interactive session to gain new insights ourselves and decide on new pilot projects with partners. Silent Delivery Drone, Silentium: The Alternative Method of Package Delivery – Presented by José Ignacio de Alvear Cárdenas, TU Delft, at the Unmanned Cargo Aircraft Conference, on November 28, 2018, at RAI Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
The on-demand service industry is expanding rapidly. Millions of packages are being delivered daily and this number is constantly increasing. Major delivery companies such as DHL, UPS or Amazon are developing small drones to deliver packages; an alternative to truck delivery which is expected to start operating in the near future. Its advantages are speed, sustainability and competitiveness: a drone is not subjected to traffic, it can be electric and is more efficient than truck delivery. The major drawback is that the current noise produced by drones is deemed by humans as more annoying than its car counterpart because of its high frequency. Researchers design 3-D-printed driverless boats that can self-assemble into other floating structures
The future of transportation in waterway-rich cities such as Amsterdam, Bangkok, and Venice — where canals run alongside and under bustling streets and bridges — may include autonomous boats that ferry goods and people, helping clear up road congestion.
Researchers from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) and the Senseable City Lab in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning (DUSP), have taken a step toward that future by designing a fleet of autonomous boats that offer high maneuverability and precise control. The boats can also be rapidly 3-D printed using a low-cost printer, making mass manufacturing more feasible.
The boats could be used to taxi people around and to deliver goods, easing street traffic. In the future, the researchers also envision the driverless boats being adapted to perform city services overnight, instead of during busy daylight hours, further reducing congestion on both roads and canals.
