Scaling Drone Delivery In Southeast Asia

by Michael Currie, Fling

Drone delivery is scaling rapidly in the large cities of Southeast Asia. In this presentation Michael Currie discusses Fling’s cargo delivery missions for medical and e-commerce within Thailand, as well as the platform for tracking and placing orders that Fling has specifically developed for aerial deliveries, that is available for use by other drone delivery service providers. For drone delivery providers just starting out, Fling’s built-out drone infrastructure makes it fast for a startup to go from buying a delivery drone to flying real missions with real, paying, customers.

What drives you?
I love the drama of a UAV flight. I’m driven to bring this technology to improve people’s lives.

Why should the delegate attend your presentation?
Buying or building, and then flying a delivery drone, is a trivial exercise for anyone with $5000 these days. Even getting permission to fly is getting easier in many jurisdictions. But it can still take months to build a mobile app and administrative platform to manage customers. So if you’re just starting out, please attend Fling’s presentation to see how you can get handle paying customers within only a few days of starting your drone delivery business.

What emerging technologies/trends do you see as having the greatest potential in the short and long run?
Autonomous vehicles will transform logistics for people and for goods.

What kind of impact do you expect them to have?
For one, it will transform the architecture of cities over the long run, as the ground floor lobby becomes less important and the architecture of the roof and mid-level vertiports becomes more important.

What are the barriers that might stand in the way?
Regulators are actually quite forward-looking and willing to consider test runs of new technology. The question is whether the public will accept drones in their public space. It took at least two generations before people got used to automobiles. Let’s hope it doesn’t take as long with drones.

“Special Quote”
Drone delivery isn’t the future; it’s already here. We’re working to make it available to as many people as possible.
