Langara College journalism students learn to gather news using drones (VIDEO)

A dozen 20-somethings at Vancouver’s Langara College are getting a bird’s-eye view of the news this semester, as some of the first journalism students in Canada to receive drone training.

And despite ethical, legal and safety concerns, the use of these remote-controlled, camera-bearing “quad-copter” drones represents a major development in journalism, said Langara journalism instructor Ethan Baron.

“Drones are probably the most exciting and interesting development in newsgathering technology since the Internet,” Baron said. “In situations of natural disasters, fires, demonstrations and riots, an aerial view really gives you a more complete picture of what’s happening on the ground.” … (Read more)
