Aspects of UTM systems & U-Space services to consider when rolling-out Cargo Drone operations

Tim McCarthy

by Dr. Tim McCarthy, Senior Lecturer, Maynooth University

Unmanned Cargo flight operations present various challenges in terms of their design, construction and management – all of which will need to be investigated, developed and adapted for long-haul, short-haul, regional and urban operational environments.

Various topics need to be considered including; automation, aircraft platform performance, airspace structure, routing, de-confliction, optimisation, emergency event handling and ground infrastructure. These topics are underpinned by regulatory (legislation, protocols, certification), technology (aerospace, sensors, connectivity, computation) and operational (UTM/U-Space services, business models, Societal) aspects.

MTSI’S RAES system – providing cargo hoist like capability for fixed winged UAS

by Peter le Hew, MTSI

The Rapid Aerial Employment System (RAES) allows loitering fixed wing aircraft to emplace a “hovering” payload on or above the ground and retrieve it. This platform agnostic system leverages the speed and range of fixed winged aircraft but provides the remote emplacement and extraction typically associated only with helicopters.

Elroy Air: Advanced Aerial Autonomy for Logistics

David Merrill

by David Merrill, Co-Founder and CEO, Elroy Air

Elroy Air is developing autonomous aircraft systems and software to deliver cargo rapidly and flexibly by air. Building on the powertrain and perception technology enabling the hybrid-electric/autonomous vehicle revolution, the first version of their vertical-takeoff-and-landing (VTOL) cargo transport system can operate outside of airport infrastructure and carries 200+ lbs over 300 miles.

Commercial cargo by air to expand delivery options, immediate aid and relief in disaster and firefighting situations, and rapid autonomous resupply for troops in the field. Elroy Air began testing its full-scale prototype aircraft in mid-2019, and will present an overview and update including lessons learned, photos/videos, and next steps.
