The VOLIRIS company is currently developing an automatic container carrier airship that will alone transport a standardized container from one point to another. As a first step, the machine will operate with helium and conventional engines. Eventually it will run using hydrogen for both lifting and propelling purposes, thus only producing water when flying.
This machine, called “hybrid” is distinguished from conventional airships by its ability to sustain itself using the lifting ability of lighter-than-air gases. The load is being carried through the aerodynamic lift provided by the envelope. It will fly at low altitude (150 m / g) and will thereof be able to avoid sensitive areas and to land quickly in case of emergency. Its flight speed will be around 150 km / h with a maximum load of 30 tons.
